Study Tips with Sammie

Guest Blogger Sammie shares a few helpful tips for Year 11 and 12 students.

As a new university student fresh out of high school in 2021, I often found myself reflecting on my previous years as a high school student. I know that for many young students, the prospect of years 11 and 12 can feel quite daunting, and so I wanted share some a few hot tips and tricks that helped me get through my later high school years. While I can’t lie, being a stressed ATAR student juggling school, competitive dance, and a social life, was difficult, but your goals and aspirations are 110% attainable and not so far out of reach as you may think.

First of all, talk to your teachers! Teachers are literally there to help you, and the good ones have your best intentions at heart. They are an active source of guidance and information, and most of them are readily available to answer your questions and concerns. One of my favourite things about high school was the great rapport our teachers had with students, and I still go in to see my favourite teachers every now and then to check up on them.

My second hot tip is to practice exam questions. Print out old exam papers, ask your teachers for example questions, and practice, practice, practice. They may seem scary, but not only will they be on the exam, they are also designed to help you understand the content in more depth. The more you practice these questions the better you will understand both the content, and what the questions are actually asking you for. These questions are so great for memory too because having a deeper understanding of the content allows for quicker recall.

And my third and final tip is to enjoy the small moments. There are so many wonderful things about high school and growing up, and enjoying every opportunity you get to experience in high school is one of them. Some of my favourite memories come from competitive school sporting events, and my high school ball, and even the just the small things like chatting to my favourite teachers, or getting to eat lunch with the same group of friends every day. Hold onto these small moments and enjoy your time being a teenager because they are so important and you may make many life long memories.

You got this!
